NOV. 4, 2008– The United States made history on Tuesday, Nov.4 2008 when the American people overwhelmingly elected Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States. Mr. Obama is the first African-American ever elected to the office. Barack Obama was an unlikely candidate for the Presidency. He was born of a Caucasian-American mother and a Kenyan, non-practicing Muslim, father. Mr. Obama was raised, primarily, in Hawaii by his maternal grandparents. He did, however, spend a couple of years in Indonesia with his mother and her new Indonesian, Muslim husband.
Although Barack Obama is not a Muslim his opponent’s campaign often tried to lead the American public to believe he was. “Muslim” was used as a dirty-word in this Presidential race. With bad new comes good. Some high-profile American citizens came to Mr. Obama’s defense. While pointing-out that he is not a Muslim the question was posed; “But, what if he was?” Cambell Brown with CNN and General Colin Powell gave wonderful commentaries addressing this question. The link to Ms. Brown is Insha’Allah, President-Elect Obama will be what our country needs at this time of uncertainty. He is inheriting a broken country. The National Debt is at a record-high ten trillion dollars. The economy is in a recession. America is involved in more than one war abroad. Gas prices rose to a record-high. As of 2005, 47 million Americans were lacking health insurance (source: US Census) and this number has done nothing but rise in the last three years.
None of the candidates that were running for the office of the President were exactly what the Islamic Community would hope for. Admittedly, all of the candidates openly support Israel. However, the Muslim community has reason for hope with President-Elect Obama. In Mr. Obama we have a man of color that knows what it’s like to encounter discrimination. He knows what it feels like to be a minority in this country. We can also, inshaAllah, have high hopes that President-Ele ct Obama will be sympathetic to the Muslim Community and It’s needs. He has family members who are Muslim and he has lived in a Muslim country. President-Elect Obama holds the hope of the American people in his hands. America needs a change and Muslims need a reason to continue to have hope in America. Mr. Obama’s task is not an easy one. He has much hope and expectations riding on his shoulders. InshaAllah, he won’t let us down. Link to Victory Speech: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/04/obama-victory-speech_n_141194.html
